Promise Program

Create opportunities for success. Mount Mary University’s Promise Program is a federally funded TRIO Student Support Services program that provides academic, career and financial support to 140 first-generation and limited-income college students each year. The program provides holistic support to help students remain in good academic standing, persist in college, and graduate with a bachelor’s degree.

Benefits of the Promise Program

Established in 2010, the Promise Program provides the following academic and social support services:

• Academic advising—Regularly meet with an academic coach to ensure proper course selection and completion of degree requirements, as well as assistance creating and monitoring academic, career and personal goals.
• Academic and social skills workshops—Workshops each semester focus on topics such as time management, study techniques, resume and cover letter writing, stress management and self-care.
• Career development—Explore major and career options, identify job shadow opportunities, perform mock interviews and write resumes and cover letters.
• Financial literacy information and training—Get assistance with financial aid planning and scholarship searches, as well as attend interactive informational sessions about managing personal budgets and other financial literacy topics.
• Advanced degree planning—Work with Promise Program staff to identify potential graduate schools and programs, prepare for entrance exams, and navigate graduate-level admission and financial aid processes.
• Cultural and educational enrichment—Enhance self-awareness and increase your sense of belonging through community-building activities with other students.
• Counseling—Counseling is available for confidential short-term and/or crisis counseling sessions.
• Professional tutoring—Schedule 30-60 minute appointments with a Learning Specialist during the academic year for assistance with study skills and coursework in math, science and writing.
• Supplemental grant aid—Promise Scholars who receive a Pell Grant may still have unmet financial need. If you actively engage in the Promise Program, you may qualify for additional monetary aid. Federal government and Mount Mary University eligibility requirements apply.

Eligibility for the Promise Program

The Promise Program serves students throughout their first undergraduate career. To be eligible for the Promise Program, you must:

• be a U.S. citizen or national, or meet residency requirements for federal student financial assistance
• be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in the next academic year at Mount Mary University
• have a demonstrated academic need for Promise Program services
• be first-generation (no parent/legal guardian obtained a bachelor’s degree) and be limited-income (see the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Postsecondary Education income guidelines.)

Complete and email, mail, or submit in person, a Promise Program Application (PDF) AND a copy of your prior year 1040 federal tax form or signed income verification statement to:
