Education

Being a teacher is a calling

—and a huge responsibility. At Mount Mary University, we’ve been educating women to become teachers since 1913. Our undergraduate education program prepares you to meet the challenges of today’s elementary, middle and high school classrooms.

Hands-on Practice in Classrooms

During your senior year, you will participate in a full-time student teaching experience. Prior to student teaching, you must complete approximately 100 hours of approved clinical experience, which includes working in diverse classroom situations. All students must clear a criminal background check prior to participating in classroom experiences or student teaching. Consult the Undergraduate Bulletin for all student teaching requirements.

Students pursuing this license are required to choose a minor from: English, mathematics, Spanish, bilingual Spanish, science or social studies.

Teaching Licensure Preparation

Mount Mary’s education programs are approved by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (WDPI), which is the state agency that licenses teachers. The programs are reviewed annually and education faculty meet regularly with a WDPI liaison and state organizations to remain on the forefront of evolving requirements in the profession.

The WDPI requires you to have passing scores on several exams (CORE, Praxis II, Foundations of Reading Test) and a portfolio demonstrating teaching proficiency (edTPA) in order to be licensed and to ensure all teachers are prepared to serve all children in their care.
