Dietetics Program Accreditation
Mount Mary’s well-respected Dietetic Internship Program in Dietetics is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, 120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2000, Chicago, Illinois 60606-6995, (800) 877-1600, ext. 5500.
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics provides detailed information about the requirements and process to become a registered dietitian nutritionist. In brief, this includes:
- Complete a bachelor's degree and receive a verification statement from an ACEND-accredited program. Effective January 1, 2024, a graduate degree will be required to be eligible to take the Commission on Dietetic Registration. (Dietetic registration exam.)
- Complete an ACEND-accredited supervised practice program such as a dietetic internship program.
- Pass the Commission on Dietetic Registration's dietetic registration exam.
- Gain certification or licensure in your state of practice, if applicable.
- Maintain continuing education as required by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
9-month, Full-time Program to Become a Registered Dietitian
The dietetic internship program is an accredited, 9-month, full-time program to prepare you to take the Registration Examination for Dietitians. The program is designed for students with an interest in disease prevention and health promotion. In the program, you’ll complete 1,200 hours of supervised practice along with 18 credits of graduate coursework.
Throughout the program, you will:
- select supervised practice rotations based on your areas of interest—a unique feature of Mount Mary’s program.
- gain competency in community nutrition, food service management and medical nutrition therapy.
- choose an elective rotation in a specialty or high interest area.
- collaborate with other interns and the program director on primary, secondary and tertiary disease prevention programs in the greater Milwaukee area.
- attend convenient evening, online and hybrid (partially online) graduate courses scheduled around your daytime supervised practice rotations.
- complete 18 graduate credits towards the 37-39 required to complete a Master of Science in Dietetics degree.
- become eligible to take the Registration Examination for Dietitians after completing the internship.

Internship & Course Schedule
As a dietetic intern, you will complete supervised practice hours in the following settings:
- Community nutrition (5-6 weeks).
- Food service management (8-9 weeks).
- Medical nutrition therapy (14-15 weeks).
- Elective rotation based on your professional interests (4-5 weeks).
Semester schedule and breaks
An intensive orientation occurs at the beginning of each semester. The program follows a modified university calendar starting in August nearly two weeks before the regular semester begins and ending in late May. School breaks include a Thanksgiving Break (4-5 day weekend), semester break (2 weeks spanning Christmas to New Year’s) and spring break (3-4 day weekend).

After an intensive 3-week orientation, a typical week includes 32 hours (4 days) at assigned rotation sites. On the fifth day, interns meet for class or collaborate with the internship director to conduct disease prevention and health promotion activities in the greater Milwaukee area. Past activities have included: community needs assessments, blood pressure and blood glucose screening, a nutrition and physical activity program for older adults, food preservation classes and nutrition classes at community centers and food pantries. In addition, expect to spend one or two evenings a week taking graduate courses.
In class, you’ll develop your dietetics skills, present case studies, listen to presentations, go on field trips, hear guest speakers and share your practice experiences. Outside of class and supervised practice time, you will be expected to complete internship assignments and attend work or professional-related activities.
Part-time employment is possible during the internship, but work hours should be limited and must fit around the internship program schedule.
Program Completion Requirements
Interns who successfully complete all rotations and assignments (minimum of 1200 supervised practice hours), pay all fees, complete all administrative paperwork, and attend and pass all classes with a “P” pass or “B” or better grade will be issued a verification statement.
Take the Next Step
After you complete the dietetic internship program and become a registered dietitian, you can continue your studies to complete a Master of Science in Dietetics. You will need to complete only 19-21 additional credits (project vs. thesis) after completing your internship to earn your master’s degree at Mount Mary. You can complete a master’s degree on a full-time or part-time basis. You will need to declare an area of concentration and conduct a research project or a thesis in that area.
